Äärirajoilla (The Outer Limits) oli kauhun, mielikuvituksen ja selittämättömien ilmiöiden teemoja huokuva tv-sarja, joka koki ”toisen tulemisen”, kun siitä tehtiin peräti 154 jaksoa sisältänyt uudisversio. Alkuperäisessä 60-luvun sarjassa oli nähty 49 jaksoa.
Äärirajoilla-sarjan mielenkiintoisimpia puolia olivat sen mielikuvituksellisuus, jännitys ja paikoin myös kauhu, jotka ilmenivät todella moninaisissa muodoissa. Tavallisesti asioilla oli kaksi ääripäätä – kun jotakin positiivista tapahtui, vaara kasvoi kasvamistaan. Esimerkkinä eräs mies oli uskomattoman onnensa ansiosta lähes kuolematon, mutta hänen epätoivonsa ja tuurinsa heijastui muihin ihmisiin äärimmäisenä epäonnena, joka johti usein manalan majoille.
Äärirajoilla keräsi loistavia arvosteluja muun muassa Internet Movie Databasessa, jossa 60-luvun sarjalla on peräti 8,2 pisteen keskiarvo kymmenestä, eikä ysäriversio jää kuin muutaman kymmenyksen tämän taakse.
