Lauantaina koittaa varsin erikoinen päivä, karkauspäivä, joka ilmestyy kalenteriin vain joka neljäs vuosi.
Vielä 90-luvulla virallinen karkauspäivä oli Suomessa helmikuun 24. päivä. Tuolloin nimipäivä siirtyi karkausvuosina 25. päivälle, ja muut helmikuun lopun nimipäivät hyppäsivät kukin yhden päivän normaalia myöhemmäksi. Tämä outo logiikka johtui siitä, että Julius Caesar valitsi aikoinaan helmikuun 24. päivän karkauspäiväksi siksi, että silloisessa helmikuussa oli vain 23 päivää. Karkauspäivä siirrettiin Suomessa nykyiselle paikalleen vasta 2000-luvun alussa.
Karkauspäivänä syntyneiden iästä vitsaillaan jatkuvasti ja tuolloin perinteisesti myös naiset ”saavat” kosia, mutta tiesitkö, että karkauspäivänä syntyminen on myös todella harvinaista.
- Mahdollisuus syntyä karkauspäivänä on vain 1:1461. Heitä on siis maailmanlaajuisesti ainoastaan viisi miljoonaa.
- Karkauspäivänä syntyneet ovat harvinaisempia kuin he, joilla on syntyessään ylimääräinen sormi tai varvas (1:500).
- On todennäköisempää kirjoittaa New York Timesin Best Seller (1:220) kuin syntyä karkauspäivänä.
Maailmassa on viisi miljoonaa karkauspäivänä syntynyttä ihmistä, joiden täytyy odottaa neljä vuotta päästäkseen juhlimaan synttäreitään oikeana päivänä.
Jos kuulut niiden joukkoon, jotka ovat syntyneet 29.2. eli karkauspäivänä, voit nyt saada maksuttoman yöpymisen. Hotels.com nimittäin hemmottelee karkauspäivänä syntyneitä jakamalla 29 kappaletta 290 dollarin arvoista koodia, jotka karkauspäivän synttärisankarit voivat käyttää valitsemaansa hotelliin.
